The inquiring leader

We live in an age of uncertainty, one outcome of which is that none of us, including leaders and managers, have all the answers to every question. If our reputations as leaders rely on us knowing best, we are all on shaky ground.

But what leaders should be doing more of is asking questions, every service or product should come with questions, how did we do? Did you like it? Did it meet your requirements?

It is well known that successful leaders are not always popular, this is often because they ask difficult questions and leave employees to find the answers which can leave employees feeling vulnerable and overworked.

As ever, a careful balance Is probably the right way forward. Perhaps we should accept that leadership is a series of paradoxes, that as leaders we should be asking the questions, but also doing our best to answer them too.
